Core Offerings : Professional GIM Trainings

The Institute offers full training for professionals in counseling professions, human services and related fields. The training curriculum spans three sequential levels each one building upon the other. At the successful completion of Level III, the graduate is eligible to become certified as a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery and is qualified to practice Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) as a specialty in a variety of settings.

All levels of training are didactic, experiential and interactive. The courses utilize multi sensory learning and direct experience in both dyads and groups. Trainings are held at residential retreat centers both in the states and abroad. The full training may takes at least two years to complete, which includes practicum requirements during Level III.

Accreditation

•  CEU credits for music therapists awarded though CBMT.

•  CEU credits for certified counselors awarded through NBCC.

•  CEU credits may be available for social workers in select states

 

Level I: Rhythms of Transformation

A 4-5 day intensive residential training providing the foundational base for GIM. Available for both professional and personal growth. Content includes:

  • Historical, Philosophical, Theoretical Perspectives
  • Roles of Guide (therapist) and Traveler (client)
  • Level I Music Programs
  • The Role of Music as Co-Therapist
  • Imagery Processes and Non-Ordinary States

Recommended Pre-Requisite: An individual GIM session or workshop.

Level II: The Art of Guiding

A 7 day intensive residential training with an emphasis on how to guide within the non-ordinary state and develop proficiency in the skillful use of music. This level is considered a cornerstone in the development of a guide and provides opportunities for deeper understanding of ones personal psychology. Content includes:

  • The art and skill of guiding interventions
  • Setting the intention
  • Assessing traveler types
  • Use of physical interventions
  • Levels of imagery experience
  • Working with expanded mind states
  • Advanced music programs and how they work
  • Post-session processing and report writing

Pre-requisites and application are required for acceptance to level II.

Level III: Career Specialization

Level III involves six advanced residential training modules, personal sessions, supervisions, practicum, readings, and music projects. It may be completed within two years. Students are assigned an advisor who serves as their mentor.

MODULE I : The GIM Counseling Practice and Therapeutic Issues

A 4 1/2 day residential module which focuses upon the practice of GIM and working with clients. Advanced music programs are introduced. Content includes:

  • The therapy session and setup
  • Advanced skills for practice with individuals and groups
  • Overview of clinical populations
  • Recognizing psychopathology
  • Assessing Music Program choice for client issues
  • Psychodynamics of Music
  • Creative Processing Techniques
  • Contraindications for use of GIM
  • Ethics and Standards of practice

MODULE II: Myth and Archetype

A 4 1/2 day residential module which views GIM through the lens of the mythic and archetypal realms of consciousness. Music as archetype is presented as companion to the archetypal psychology of Jung, Campbell, and Pearson. Content includes:

  • Archetypes and GIM
  • Advanced guiding techniques
  • Music as Archetype
  • The Individuation Process of Growth
  • Pearson's Heroic Myth Index
  • Mask Making and Ritual

MODULE III: Encounters with Spirituality and the Transpersonal

A 4-5 day residential which explores expanded states of awareness and the unique potential and place of music from this perspective. Transpersonal themes are explored as they emerge through GIM. Content includes:

  • Transpersonal theories of Jung, Wilber, Grof and others
  • Transpersonal and spiritual dimensions of being
  • Music in the expanded state
  • The mystical and the sacred
  • Healing and GIM
  • Rites of passage

MODULE IV: Music as Co-Therapist

A weekend seminar which gives an in-depth exploration of the unique function of music as the centerpoint of the Bonny Method and GIM process. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of the GIM guide's knowledge and understanding of the GIM music programs. Contents include:

  • Conscious Listening
  • Fundamental elements of music
  • Musical vocabulary, styles, and periods
  • Structure and analysis of musical compositions in GIM programs
  • How music functions as therapist and transformer
  • The relationship of music and the GIM guide

MODULES V AND VI: Supervision Weekends

Two weekend seminars which focus on strengthening proficiency in all aspects of the individual GIM therapy session. Close supervision is offered through observation and feedback sessions. Contents include:

  • Skill development in pre-session interview
  • Matching intention with music choice
  • Advanced guiding interventions
  • Physical Interventions
  • Post session processing
